Care Guide

Garment Care

Last updated: June 2026

Our pieces are made to be loved for a long time. Here's how to care for each fabric so your TRIBEKANNA wardrobe stays as beautiful as the day it arrived.

Before you begin

Each TRIBEKANNA piece is handmade from natural and heritage fabrics, so a little extra care keeps it looking beautiful for years. Always check any care label first, treat stains gently and promptly, and when in doubt, wash cool and air-dry. Avoid tumble dryers, harsh bleach, and wringing.

Linen

Linen loves a gentle touch and softens beautifully with age.

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle in lukewarm water, avoid very hot or icy water.
  • Don't overload the machine; crowding can twist linen out of shape.
  • Wash with similar colours, weights, and fabrics.
  • If hand washing, use a gentle swishing motion, never wring, twist, or scrub.
  • Use a mild detergent and rinse thoroughly before drying flat or on a hanger.

Ankara

Ankara is vibrant and best washed with care to keep its colours rich.

  • Pre-treat any stains with a gentle stain remover or a little mild detergent before washing.
  • Hand wash separately in cool, lightly soapy water.
  • Swirl gently, don't rub hard, as the colours can bleed.
  • Let it soak a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
  • Gently press out excess water without twisting, and hang to dry away from direct heat. Never tumble dry.

Silk

Silk is delicate and deserves the gentlest handling.

  • Hand wash in cool water with a detergent made for delicates, or dry clean.
  • Never soak for long, bleach, or wring the fabric.
  • Press out water gently in a towel and dry flat, away from direct sunlight.
  • Iron on the lowest setting, inside out, while slightly damp.

Lace

Lace is intricate and snags easily, so treat it tenderly.

  • Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, or place in a mesh laundry bag if machine washing on delicate.
  • Don't rub, wring, or scrub, press gently to release dirt.
  • Lay flat to dry, reshaping by hand, and keep away from hooks and zips that can catch the threads.

Adire

Adire is hand-dyed, so protect its depth of colour.

  • Hand wash separately in cool water for the first few washes, as natural dyes may release colour.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach entirely.
  • Rinse well, press out water gently, and dry in the shade, direct sun can fade the dye.

Aso-oke

Aso-oke is a handwoven heritage fabric; gentle care preserves its texture and shimmer.

  • Dry cleaning is recommended, especially for pieces with metallic or beaded detail.
  • If spot-cleaning at home, dab gently with a damp cloth, never soak or scrub.
  • Store flat or rolled to protect the weave, and iron on low with a cloth barrier.

Cotton

Cotton is hard-wearing and easy to care for.

  • Machine wash warm or cool with similar colours.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach on coloured pieces.
  • Tumble dry low or air-dry; remove promptly to reduce creasing, and iron on medium while slightly damp.

Cashmere

Cashmere is luxurious and long-lasting when cared for well.

  • Hand wash in cool water with a cashmere or wool detergent, or dry clean.
  • Never wring, press water out gently and dry flat on a towel, reshaping by hand.
  • Store folded (not hung) to keep its shape, and keep it safe from moths with cedar or lavender.
